Matthew has loved Ariel from the moment he found her in the tunnels, her bee’s wings falling away. They live in Safe, an underground refuge for those fleeing the city Above—like Whisper, who speaks to ghosts, and Jack Flash, who can shoot lightning from his fingers.

But one terrifying night, an old enemy invades Safe with an army of shadows, and only Matthew, Ariel, and a few friends escape Above. As Matthew unravels the mystery of Safe’s history and the shadows’ attack, he realizes he must find a way to remake his home—not just for himself, but for Ariel, who needs him more than ever before.
I don't even know what to say in my review, but one thing for sure, this was a huge disappointment. I was really excited when the publisher gave me a copy of this, and the cover was gorgeous as well. "Above" was on of my most anticipated 2012 novels, but I haven't had a book that disappointed me as much as it did. I am not going to be harsh, but I am going to write my honest opinion about this book.
As I started reading, everything can be summed up in one word: Confusing. I didn't understand the characters, the plot, and I didn't even know what gender half the characters were. More than half of the time, I was just reading words that made no sense whatsoever. I honestly tried using my imagination while reading this book. I accepted the fact that Leah Bobet's writing is very different and difficult to get used to compared to other authors, and I did want to give the book a chance, but unfortunately, my brain just couldn't process what I was reading. I just felt like the book was mixed up in a jumble, and sometimes the characters would be someplace, then the next sentence they would be in an entirely other place. I really have nothing positive to say about this book, other than its amazing cover.
Overall, I am sorry to say that I didn't enjoy this book, because I really liked the synopsis and was dying to read it. This might have not been the book for me, but like I always say, you might like it. Give it a chance, and I do hope that you will enjoy it much more than I did.

  3. Awwh. Sorry you didn't enjoy this - I didn't either. Didn't finish it, in fact. Was the ending satisfying? I've heard a lot of good things about that ending. Who knows? Maybe someday I'll pick it up again.

  4. I've been reading a lot of negative reviews for this one lately, so I'm not sure whether I want to read it or not.
It's too bad though because the cover is really pretty and intriguing. I think for now I'm just going to stick to borrowing the book from someone.

Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts with us, Farah.
