Throne of Glass: Almost Two Years Later

This post might actually kill some of you when you read my admission. So I’m just going to say it really fast, kind of like taking off a bandaid! IttookmealmosttwoyearstoactuallyfinishThroneofGlass. I know, I know. Those of you that are fans of this series are cringing already and some of you probably don’t even believe me. Well here’s the proof:

Two months shy of two years! I can’t even believe it. To be honest, when I first started the book back in February of 2014 I was loving it. There is action, mystery, intrigue, political issues, masquerade balls, and some downright dreamy boys, and by dreamy boys I mean Chaol…duh! This left no doubt in my mind that Throne of Glass was going to be an all time favorite of mine...and then it happened. It was like my mind decided to push the brakes. I spent so much time trying to finish this book. There was nothing I wanted more than to join everyone on the Crown of Midnight bandwagon, but I just couldn’t. The more I tried to force myself to read, the less I could actually get through. It got to the point where I was just reading 5 pages and giving up. It felt like just reading 30 pages was taking me hours. Has this ever happened to any of you? You’re enjoying a book but suddenly you can’t sit and read more than a few pages at a time? It’s terrible and I don’t even know why or how this happens. I think this phenomena needs a name (unless I’m the only one who suffers from this and then we can just called it the Audris Virus).

To motivate myself to finish Throne of Glass in 2014, I went out and bought the pretty UK cover of Crown of Midnight, because that’s what us bookish people do when we can’t get through one book, we buy another! But even that didn’t help. This is when I accepted my fate. I would never be able to finish Throne of Glass.

Then everyone started raving again with the release of Queen of Shadows this year and I just had to give it another shot. Around August I picked it up again. I told myself I would fly through it this time. "Last time was a total fluke, Audris. You were probably just in a reading slump”. And then the same thing happened again. I reread what I had previously gotten through, 5 pages at a time might I add, and then FINALLY in the early morning of December 13, 2015 I finished Throne of Glass.

What even happened to me? Overall I found this book to be entertaining, a bit slow in the middle (which might have something to do with my struggles) but not slow enough to have been the only factor at fault, filled with a swoon worthy Captain of the Guard (forget the crown prince), and a mystery that kept me interested and is probably the only reason why I pushed myself to finish the book. That, and the 10 million people on my twitter who fangirl over it on the daily.

In the end, I’m going to celebrate this victory with a party and I have to admit, I'm more proud of myself for finishing this book than I was for graduating from college. Okay, I might be exaggerating, but I’ll be picking up the novellas and Crown of Midnight relatively soon since I did find myself caring for most of the characters. Let’s hope they don’t take me another 4 years to finish them.

  1. omg it took you foreevveerrr! I'm usually pretty terrible if I keep putting a book down for other reasons than sleep, food, and work. Usually if I have put it down for more than a week, that means it should be a DNF. I respect your determination though! Also that you still enjoyed the book (how did you manage to remember what happened??)

I'm mean, it's an amazing book and i was completely in Love with The story, but i stopped to read another book and now i Just can't continue reading it. I read 10 pages and i'm already tired, and it's so Crazy because I WAS LOVING THE BOOK.

  4. Awesome review Audris :) Glad you liked this one, lol. Though it took you forever to read it :D You are awesome. I had to DNF this one at page 80. So I don't want to try it again, to be honest, lol. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about it :)

  5. I have been hearing so many great things about this book, but even I never went ahead with reading it somehow. Doesn't really matter how long you take to finish a book, so long as you don't give up. I'm glad it paid off well though, so yay for that. Awesome review!
