Blog Tour: The Serpent's Ring by H.D. Bolton - Danna

This is the first middle grade book that gets reviewed on the blog by Danna, so yay for that! Danna is the new reviewer on the blog! She'll be reviewing middle grade books, so now our blog will also include MG titles from now on! Now, being part of this tour was so much fun! Not only do we have a review available for you, but also an interview with the author herself, and a giveaway!

Title: The Serpent's Ring (Relics of Mysticus #1)
Author: H.B. Bolton
Publication date: July 2012
Genre(s): Middle Grade (Fantasy)
Source: BlogTour
Format: Physical Copy
Evan and Claire Jones are typical teenagers, forced to go with their parents to yet another boring museum ... that is, until something extraordinary happens to make their day a little more than interesting. After following a strange little creature into a closed exhibit, Evan and his older sister, Claire, discover the Serpent’s Ring, one of the magical relics formed from the shattered Mysticus Orb. Purely by accident, they have awakened its powers and opened a portal to Sagaas, land of ancient gods.

Before the siblings can comprehend what has happened, the Serpent’s Ring is wrenched from Evan’s hand by an enormous bird and flown back to Aegir, the Norse god of the sea. Evan and Claire, accompanied by a band of unlikely heroes, must retrieve the Serpent’s Ring before Aegir uses its immense powers to flood all the lands on Earth.
Wow! What a great book! It suits all of my needs. It's interesting, funny and magical. My favorite character is Evan because he is funny and has an attitude. He reminds me a bit of Percy Jackson because he is witty and always has a smart comment up his sleeve. My favorite part was when Evan was eating the Poppin-Droppins. It reminds me of my brother, who eats by shoveling food into his mouth like a bulldozer. I like how there are cute little recipies they put in the back of the book that told you how to actually make food from the story. I thought it was a nice touch. I love to cook so it was really sweet to put those recipies in the book.
My least favorite part of the book was when Dunkle and Barfel ran away in fear. It proved just how cowardly they were. And poor Evan had to face a sea god all by himself! I was mad at Sigurd for hitting on Claire. Achy should he like her? It's not fair to Claire! He's immortal and he probably dated a lot of girls in his life! He is my least favorite protagonist because of this fact.I also dislike Agier because of his temper. Sometimes I wanna be like " SHUT UP!!!!!!!".
Overall, the book was really good. It was slightly boring in the beginning, but the end was satisfing. It's a good book for middle school readers. I can't wait for the next book!!
Why is there a small letter H in each picture at the beginning of every chapter?

It’s a little like finding Waldo I drew the illustrations, so I added my initial to each one.
Recently, I drew an illustration of the mermaid Lazonia and decided to swap this image with the
current picture of the underwater city. It should be published in the book by next week. Here’s a
sneak peek:

What would happen if three people went to Sagaas at the same time? Would one person not
get a power?

That’s a great question. The power is given from touching the relic, and since Claire and Evan held the Serpent’s Ring at the same time they were both given a power. In the next book, The Trickster’s Totem, I’m going to have just one person find the relic — one power to one person. I’d love to add a few spoilers here, but I probably shouldn’t.

In the next book, will you add a third character? Or will it still be Evan and Claire? Will they
be the same age?

The Trickster’s Totem begins a few months after their adventures in Asgard. Evan is still
fourteen and has just started his freshman year in high school. Claire is sixteen and a junior at
the same school. Dunkle will be joining them on their adventure into the spirit world of Native
American legends, but Barfel will stay behind to watch over the Serpent’s Ring. I will add more
characters to the story: A dragon named Kehl will be the protector of the Trickster’s Totem, and
a Native American warrior will be joining the group as well.

Describe yourself in less than a tweet (140 characters)

Inspired artist, creative cook, dream dweller, Disney enthusiast, infatuated wife, and Mother of two adorable children and three wild dogs.

What made you want to write about gods and magic and things like this?

Since childhood, I’ve been enchanted by fantastical stories: becoming whisked away into a world where anything is possible, magical beings dwell, and the fate of the world can be saved by unexpected heroes and heroines. I studied humanities in college, and was fascinated by the symbolism in ancient art, literature, philosophy and music from around the world. I wanted to create a place where one could visit all of the realms of mythology. Each novel in the Relics of Mysticus series will take Evan and Claire into a different realm.
At last, its time for the GIVEAWAY!! You can win a COPY of The Serpent's Ring, a rune box like the one in the picture below, and a bookmark! Also guess what? Its INTERNATIONAL! So it's open to all you lovely bloggers! Thanks for stopping by and good luck!

  9. I love that there's a hidden "H" in the illustration at the beginning of each chapter, what a cool idea. I always did love finding Waldo:) While I'm not a big reader of MG, this sounds like such a fun book, and I have cousins that are the perfect age for this, so I'm going to recommend it to them:)
