Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare - Farah

Title: City of Bones
Author: Cassandra Clare

Publication date: March 27, 2007
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Genre(s): Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy)
Source: Bought
Format: Paperback
Pages: 485
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. .
I knew City of Bones was going to be an amazing book before I even started it. I have read the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and I just fell in love.
The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices are said to be companion novels, so the idea of the story remains the same, just different setting and characters. I will honestly say that I loved the characters in this book, more than The Infernal Devices.
I really love Clary. I love that fact that she's an artist, like me. I really like how she isn't shallow, and how she is a strong character as well. She is a smart girl, and thinks for herself. What I liked most about her is that she didn't like two guys at once (like how it was with Tessa in The Infernal Devices), Clary stuck to one, and I really liked that.
Jace is okay. I guess he was just too similar to Will in The Infernal Devices. I guess I'm just a bit tired of all those bad boy characters. Though he's nice and all, and I do like him, but I guess I'm not just all gaga.
The story is very interesting as well. It grabbed all my attention, from  the beginning, and especially to the end. I was also very shocked towards how Simon was allowed to blend in with them as well. Even though he was not a shadowhunter, he stayed with them and helped them, which was pretty cool because i really like Simon.
I'm really happy about this book, and I really do want to read the second book. With all the books i have on my TBR list, I hope i can fit "City of Ashes" in there somehow!

  1. Glad you liked it! :) I read the first 3 MI books before I read the ID series, but I actually prefer ID. Maybe it's the time period for me; I hadn't read any steampunk before so I really really got into ID. And I love Jace, but after meeting Jem & Will, I can't help but like them both more! Keep reading! :)

  4. Great review! I'm not much of a Jace fan either lol, I love Simon though <3 It's interesting to see what people who read TID first think of TMI :)

  5. I have been on the fence about this for a looooooooooooooong time now. Because I am not much of a vampire, were-wolf, shape shifter kind of person. But everyone seems to LOVE this series. I think I definitely need to give this first book a chance, just to see whether I like it or not. Thanks for the great review!
