This is W.A.R. sounded like a revenge story I would love. Unfortunately, it wasn't as great as I expected it to be. Willa is murdered before the story starts, and her best friends are seeking revenge on her "killer". The four girls for a group based on Willa Ames-Roawan's initials, therefore W.A.R. The characters weren't too bad for me, but I guess the plot was what lacked a bit. Also, some parts were very cliche and hard to believe. I think there was no depth in the characters either, which is why they were just okay for me. Also, this book would somehow change POV's without clearly warning the readers, and that would totally put me off sometimes. I keep thinking I'm reading about a certain girl, then it turns out it was about another girl. It was still entertaining when the girls started planning their revenge, which is why I kept wanting to read on. Their main suspects, the Gregory's, just didn't get in my head. I'm still confused about James Gregory, and I'm not sure how I feel about him as a character either. I really wanted to hate someone in this book, but like I said, there was just no depth in any of the characters for me to either love them or hate them. They were all mediocre. Overall, This is W.A.R. was just an okay for me. Yes it was full of cliches, but I was still entertained.
Having read a few books by Lauren Barnholdt, I was very excited to start Right of Way! What better than a road trip story to read in summer time? I have always been a fan of road trip books, and I seriously had high hopes for this one. Peyton and Jace have once had a thing together, but then it just stopped. When being told that they were going to meet in some relative's wedding, Peyton and Jace were kind of hesitant and scared to see each other once again. I loved that this book was told from both Peyton's and Jace's point of way, because that way I was able to fully understand both characters feelings towards each other. Peyton was kind of annoying with her forceful attitude and snarky comebacks, but she later grew on me. Jace was a great guy too, but I don't think there was anything different about him. Jace will be one of those typical forgettable characters, and I hate that. What I didn't like in this book was how it would switch to the past and present. It would kind of confuse me sometimes, and I just wanted them to be on the road! This wasn't much of a road trip books like other books out there, but it was still enjoyable. There was a cool story to this book, but I don't think it was that different or significant. Overall, right of way was an entertaining book that I flew reading. If you're looking for a cute, chill, summer book, then you might want to consider this one!
Aaaww, I love THIS IS W.A.R. I actually gave it 5 stars because I love murder in YA. I haven't read any of Lauren Barnholdt's books but I heard Right of Way isn't her best. Great mini-reviews, Farah!
ReplyDeleteI've been so curious about This is WAR, but sucks you didn't enjoy it all that much. And I've not heard of the other book. Great reviews! :)

I love Lisa and Laura, so that's too bad WAR wasn't so great. And I love road trip books, but have had bad experiences with Lauren's books so I'm not sure whether I would enjoy it or not. I'm sure I'll pick it up one day though...
ReplyDeleteI'll admit This is WAR isn't my typical genre and I actually don't like those revenge type plots, unless it involves loads of romance. lol ;p I feel in books like this, the characters need to be strong in order for the reader to connect with the story, sorry this wasn't the case here. I don't think I'll pick this up. As for Right of Way, I am SUPER excited for it. I just love cute contemporaries like this one, and even though Jace is not memorable I can't wait to read it, and see what I think of it. Glad you enjoyed it overall, though! Fantastic reviews, Farah! :D

It's always a shame when characters are flat and when the story is filled with cliche's. I'm happy that you liked Right of way better! :)

I thought the This is W.A.R. was wasn't all that great either. But I do like the sounds of Right of Way. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Great reviews.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny b/c the past and present views in Right Of Way made the book enjoyable to me, but I agree about Jace. He was not very fleshed out as a character.

Thanks for sharing your view on these two books! Glad to see that you found the books entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into revenge book and the fact that This is W.A.R. wasn't memorable on top of that has me passing on that one. Right of Way was one I was looking forward to, but I've seen reviews that convince me that the story would frustrate me. The fact that Jace is forgettable is another strike against it. Great honest reviews, Farah. :)
ReplyDeleteAhh, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy This is WAR that much :\ I had been meaning to read it ages ago, but couldn't get into it, hih :) Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts. <3
ReplyDeleteThis is W.A.R has great cover but the story didn't appeal to me much. I agree on your review. :D
