After faking their deaths to escape from prison, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.
Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper’s true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….
Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.
Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can’t even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and “laying low” is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.
With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back?
Breaking Point is the sequel to the popular dystopian novel Article 5. When I read Article 5, I couldn't help but love the different take Kristen Simmons took for her dystopian world. She was able to combine road trip with dystopian and I loved the developing relationship between Chase and Ember and that they already had a past together. Breaking Point takes us to the hub of the revolutionaries who want to overthrow the current corrupt government. I thought we would get much more action and thrilling scenes in Breaking Point unfortunately we mostly get a whining Ember and a detached Chase.
It took me a while to warm up to Breaking Point, I was used to the fast momentum and filled action scenes of Article 5 but we take a step back in this novel and concentrate more on Ember, her emotions towards Chase, and her constant internal whining that I honestly couldn't take anymore. I understood Chase's detachment, at least his made sense, and I felt sorry towards him for Ember's indecisiveness towards everything. Moving on from that, we learn more about the ins of the revolutionaries and we meet more characters, some I liked, while others I found to be very suspicious. You get most of the action towards the end of the book and this seems to be a recurrence in many dystopian sequels so I won't dwell on that.
I always have a soft spots for dystopians so even with all of its flaws I still really enjoyed Breaking Point. I just love the whole government conspiracy that went on in Breaking Point and that we are finally close to fighting the system and that just brings excitement. I can't wait to find out how everything will be resolved and for Ember to finally end her doubts, insecurities, and whining.
Oh that's a shame that you had issues with Ember in this book, but I normally can't stand whiny characters either. I adored Article 5, so I hope I can still enjoy this! Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry that you didn't love this one, Juhina. I haven't read Article 5 yet, but I've heard that it's really good. And honestly, I just can't take a whiny character either! Fab review, Juhina! (:

I so need to read this book! Thanks for the review!!

This is a really awesome review, Juhina! I'm very interested to read Breaking Point, and this is actually the first review I've read of it- Ember sounds like a big disappointment and I hope the relationship between her and Chase that was so intriguing will get back on track in the final book. When I do manage to get a copy to read, I just hope I can make it past Ember, because I really don't like me a constantly whiny character, especially one you're supposed to like. (And previously did!)
ReplyDeleteAgain, this is a really great review!
OHHHH...I'M SOOOO JEALOUS YOU GOT TO READ THIS!!! I read and completely fell in love with the first book and I can't wait to read this one and find out more about Chase and Ember. I'm disappointed about the missing action, because that was one of the major things I loved in the first book as well. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and read this to find out. I'm sorry it didn't do it for you as much as the first book, :( but I'm glad you still enjoyed it! I also really like the government-conspiracy stories! lol ;p
ReplyDeleteAMAZING review, Juhina! :D

I asked for one thing toward this book - no love triangles. As it seems I won't have to deal with it here but I'm sad to hear that about Ember :( Still I hope I'll enjoy this book a little bit more than you did. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteI want to read it really bad!
ReplyDeleteBut now that I see "unfortunately we mostly get a whining Ember and a detached Chase" I am kind of put off.
I'll still read it, just not get to hyped out right now!
Thanks for the honest review :)
Great review. The wait for the last book is going to be torture but I still can't wait to get it.
ReplyDeleteI have read a couple reviews that said that they're basically just hiding out, with not much action. Hmm. Well at least no love triangles!!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I need to read this book soon!
ReplyDeleteAw, I'm dying for this book...dying!! At least it's good!
ReplyDeleteI never read Article 5, but I am intrigued because so many people loved it....
ReplyDeleteEeek, I'm starting this one right now and I hope it's at least a four for me, since I really liked the first one. *crosses fingers*
ReplyDeleteIt's so disheartening and so believable a future that it breaks my heart. I'm so invested in her characters and immediately wanted the next book as soon as I finished this one.
